Pacha - january 27, 2009

Normal winter weather conditions again at last. Large indoor area. Good work at walk, with haunches in and out on circles. Improvements in shoulder-ins, becoming more fluid. Still some hesitation on the left handside, where leg aids need to be very light. Trotting session went fine too until a big hay trailer arrived and was unloaded at the back of the arena. Pacha was unsettled, and I thought it was better to keep him at the other hand of the arena, where we could carry on working at posting, then sitting trot without significant trouble. I focused on descente d'encolure, because I had seen him the day before ridden with taut draw reins, resulting in high head carriage against the hand combined with head btv, and jerky trot. The dangers of draw reins used in inappropriate fashion are real indeed. Incidentally, I never quite understood why Beudant, whom I admire in every respect, is against descente d'encolure. Maybe his obsession with relevement d'encolure carried him away on this point. I find it such a helpful practice for bringing calm and order back again.
The session having been perturbated by the hay unloading, we skipped the canter session, and went back to stable after one hour of good, gentle work.
